Maurice Keeler, wan, hollow-eyed, and miserable, was seated on a stool just outside the door in the early morning sunlight. Near him sat his mother, peeling potatoes, her portly form obscured by a trailing wistaria vine. What Maurice had endured during his two weeks with the measles nobody knew but himself. "I have met with several. To which did he refer?" Elgin was about to answer when he caught a gasp from the watchers on the road. "Teacher's comin'!" went forth the cry. "Be here," said he, "on Saturday next. It may be that I'll give you the berth. No more words. Off with you!".
